What is going on with the Louisiana Purchase? [The Great American Fact-Finder]

(1803), the acquisition from France of the area between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains on the east and west and between Canada and the Gulf of Mexico on the north and south. A major achievement of President Thomas Jefferson, the $15 million purchase of the Louisiana Territory doubled the size of the United States and opened the West to American settlement.

What’s up with the Gadsden Purchase? [The Great American Fact-Finder]

(December 30, 1853), a strip of land in the southwestern part of the United States acquired from Mexico for $10 million. Arranged by James Gadsden, U.S. minister to Mexico, the land was purchased to facilitate a direct railroad route to southern California.
