Taking the SAT a 3rd Time
By TNteam • Mar 20th, 2008 • Category: SATPlease take the following information with a grain of salt and check your college choices’ policies; its seems that some colleges have changed theirs.
Some wonder whether it is a good idea to take the SAT three times instead of the conventional 2 times of testing. If you are looking to increase your average by taking the SAT a third time, lets look at the math behind getting you a raised score:
Whatever number of points you want to increase your score by must be multiplied by another factor then added to a hypothetical third score.
For example:
You take the SAT for the first time and get an 1100. You take it a second time and get 1130. Right now [since you have taken it twice] most colleges take the higher of the score, meaning your score is 1130.
Now, if you want to raise your score by taking it a third time, most colleges won’t take the best score, they will take the average of the three scores.
(1100 + 1130 + 3rd score)/3 = applicable score
So if you want your applicable score to go up to 1200, you will need a
(2230 + x) / 3 = 1200
2230 + x = 3600
x = 1370
This means, in order to raise your score from 1130 to 1200 [70 points] you must get a 1370 on the third test [240 points better].
Take this into consideration when deciding to take the 3rd test or not.
