New technology and its greater accessibility have allowed athletes to become better, stronger, faster… But can we really say that athletes are becoming better and that’s why they are setting new records?

We can’t discount that athletes have reached a new personal level, but we have to give some credit to the technology and equipment athletes have chosen to use.

In just the first few days of the Beijing Olympics, 16 new world records were set by swimmers.  Coaches and athletes like to say its just progression of the sport, but others debate on how much of a factor the new Speedo LZR Racer have on the amazing swimming we’ve seen.

The suit has proven effective.  Swimmers sporting this tight suit have broken over 50 world records since February (when the suit debuted).

So what is this suit made out of? Well, it’s all about eliminating drag.

The fabric is the lightest woven swim fabric in existence.  It gives great perfomance in terms of speed because of its low friction and completely smooth surface.   The panels are made from ultrathin membranes that also create a seamless shape.  The core section of the suit holds the athlete in an optimal body position.  The surface is so flexible and smooth because the LZR is ultrasonically put together.  Finally, grippers at the ankles hold the suit in place.

The suit is said to cost around $700 and can only be worn 4 times.   It’s a wonder how the swimmers get their suits on.

In one rare shot, audiences got to see Phelps get “jiggled” in between heats so that his muscles (and suit?) wouldn’t get tense.

Right now, China is leading with the most Golds, second is the United States and third is Russia.

1. Make sure your tires are inflated at the right levels.

Tires that are not filled completely/corrrectly suffer from rolling resistance on the road. When your tires are not in their proper condition, they car has to work harder to move down the road, thus using more fuel. You can find your correct inflation levels in your car’s manual or the driver seat’s doorjamb.

2. Economize your driving habits.

Don’t practice jerky driving habits. Don’t accelerate and decelerate quickly, make quick starts or change gears too often. Cars use a lot of fuel during hard acceleartion. Smooth constant speed and gradual acceleartions use less fuel.

3. Get the junk out of the trunk.

The heavier your car is, the more work it will take to move it around. Check your backseat and trunk for extra items that you don’t need to be carrying around. Avoid making your car your second bedroom.

4. Close the windows.

Open windows create drag and resistance. This forces the car to use more fuel to do its work. This is especially important on highways where your speed is high (the drag is even worse!)

5. Learn and use cruise control.

Maintaning constant speeds takes less fuel than accelerating. Make sure you know how to use your cruise control though before you use it. Cruise control can also help if you have a speeding habit.

6. Avoid idling.

If you know you will be stationary for more than one minute, turn off the engine. The fuel used to turn the engine on and off is less than what you’ll use up by idling.

See if these changes worked for you by keeping record of the miles you were able to drive on your next tank of gas.

NEW YORK (AP) — 50 Cent has sued Taco Bell, claiming the fast-food restaurant chain is using his name without permission in advertising that asks him to call himself 99 Cent.

The rapper says in a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday that the Mexican-themed chain features him in a print ad asking him to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent. His real name is Curtis Jackson.

The rapper’s court papers say the ad is part of Taco Bell’s “Why Pay More?” campaign, which promotes items for under a dollar, including Cinnamon Twists for 79 cents, Crunchy Tacos for 89 cents and Bean Burritos for 99 cents. The papers say the Irvine, Calif.-based company sent a bogus letter requesting the name change to the news media but not to the rapper.

Take Batman Begins - add a much scarier and psychotic villain, more intense action, and more emotion and a LOT MORE and you’ve got The Dark Knight.

The movie starts with action, effectively leaving out the usual slow beginning. The Joker is certainly as creepy, “freak”ish and cynical as he is meant to be. Ledger’s work was impressive -awe worthy.

It was slightly disconcerting having Gyllenhaal replace Holmes as Rachel. It is not clear to me as to whether Rachel’s personality change is due to script and plot demands or if it was Holmes’ replacement with Gyllenhaal. Whatever it was, Rachel wasn’t as sweet or ’symphathizable’ as she was in Batman Begins.

Gordon does not disappoint and was very likable! He is a hero! Harvey Dent’s intro as Gotham’s new DA is pleasant and a nice touch that gives The Dark Knight a new face as compared to Batman Begins.

Plot wise, The Dark Knight is crazy! So much goes down; There are a lot of side stories that work to a certain climax. At times it seems that too much is happening at once, where you are enjoying it fully, but you don’t know exactly what is going on. I got confused at some points, where the dialogue wasn’t very clear or the plot became a little muddled. I think another viewing would clear that up.

All in all, the movie was well made, and although I still have some questions about the plot, The Dark Knight lived up to all its expectations. I am wondering whether there is going to be a third, I need to see it again to know.

1. Flip Flops to Shower In

The showers may be used by a lot of other kids at the camp, the water might sit on the shower floor for longer than you’d like…use the flip flops to keep protected from potential bacteria or fungus lurking in community showers

Pick flip flops that are thin and don’t absorb water. You don’t want your shoes to sit in your room all wet, where they might collect bacteria or fungus.

Also, think about picking plain flip flops so that they constant contact with water and soap doesn’t ruin your nice printed flip flops.

2. A Shower Pail with Holes on the Bottom

A shower pail keeps all your shower supplies organized and in the same place. This way you won’t be caught in the middle of your shower without your shampoo or whatever. The key here is to make sure your pail has holes in the bottom so that your stuff doesn’t collect water and soap etc in the pail. This again will eliminate problems with bacteria and fungus.

3. Don’t Shower In Any of the Middle Stalls

In certain types of showers, there aren’t drains for every shower. What does this mean for you? If you are in a middle stall (or a stall with a drain), other people’s shower water is flowing through your shower to get to the drain. Shower water can have all kinds of stuff besides soap, shampoo, dirt and bacteria…GROSS. Pick a side or end shower so nobody’s bath water passes by during your shower time.

4. Hand Soap

This necessity is too often taken for granted. Sinks at camps normally don’t have it! Without hand soap you might find yourself feeling dirty (especially after that middle stall shower) and helpless. Without hand soap you can’t work with your contact lenses or wash your hands after touching the bathroom door knob.

5. Extension Cord

You may not realize, but you have a lot of stuff that needs an outlet: hair dryer, cell phone charger, iron, straightener etc. Now add on your roomate(s) necessities…its important to think about. Unfortunately the builders of most college campuses and summer camp facilities did not. There won’t be enough outlets AND they will be in inconvenient places. This is important because your roomate might need to straigten her hair on one side of the room while you need to iron your shorts on the other!
